Archaeology Is A Way Of Connecting With The Past

The word archaeology comes from the ancient Greek and is actually composed of two components. The first one—archaios—simply means “ancient,” while the second one—logos—means “word” or “speech.” Taken together, it means a discussion or a study of ancient things.

Archaeology is the study of historical human culture and its analysis, documentation and interpretation. It not only opens doors to our past, but also helps us understand and appreciate our diverse heritage and culture.

It is, by all accounts, a scintillating profession, as long as you don’t mind the dirt, dust, heat and humidity that typically accompany digs. By recovering, documenting and analyzing various historical artifacts, the science of archaeology contributes to mankind’s knowledge of his forebears and the times in which they lived.

The degree of minutiae involved in archaeology will prepare you for many other professions, such as accounting, business and law, all where keen attention to detail is absolutely critical. You can choose a career in numerous areas of the field, including paleontology (the study of fossils), environmental archaeology (the study of the soil), historical archaeology (the study of history through sites and their artifacts) and underwater archaeology (the study of water-submerged cities and shipwrecks.)

One particularly appealing feature is the fact that travel to sites of ancient cultures such as Peru, China, Greece, Italy, Turkey, Egypt, Libya and Lebanon is necessary. For many archaeologists, they’re either employed by a government entity or a private archeological company as a contractor.

A word of caution, though; while there are some in the industry who make a great deal of money, you should not necessarily assume that you will as well. Given the intense interest in this work, remuneration is typically not very generous. College students may want to gain experience, while older adults may just be looking for book material.
