The Pronghorn Antelope is the only antelope that is native to North America. Pronghorns are a plains animal that has had to adapt due to the encroachment of civilization. The plains states are the natural habitat of the Pronghorn. The yyspeed of this animal is unmatched in nature. A mature antelope can reach speeds in excess of fifty miles per hour. Not only are they fleet of hoof but they also have binocular eyesight, they can see approaching danger for a long ways away. Their eyesight is not only an attribute to their welfare but it can sometimes be their undoing. Antelope, by nature, are a very curious animal. The indians used to use this curiosity of the animal to their own advantage by "flagging" the antelope within range of their bows and arrows. Flagging is tying a white rag or piece of matrerial on the end of a stick and waving it in such a way as to attract their attention. The antelope being as curious as they are, will eventually come to see what is waving in the breeze.
With the progress of civilization the Pronghorn has adjusted to the needs of the herd, so to speak. It is no longer a surprise to see up to a dozen of these animals walking down mainstreet of some towns or cities in the west. They are so numerous, in some areas, there have been posted signs along the highways indicating animal activity in the immediate area. Automobile/animal accidents are quite common and very deadly for the animal.
While intrusion by the human population has imbalanced the natural habits of these animnals, it has not been able to change these habits. Today where there are beautiful manicured lawns and gardens, you will also find the Pronghorn. Houses have taken the place of old grazing areas that the herds have used for years before human intervention.
The Pronghorn Antelope is alive, healthy and multiplying in spite of human beings.
